Storming of the Bastille*
In July of 1789, the Bastille was attacked by an angry, aggressive mob. When it was attacked, it was actually only holding seven prisoners. These prisoners were not the reason the mob had gathered. They had gathered to demand the enormous stores of ammunition that were being held withing the prisons walls. When the governor of the prison refused to comply, the mob charged and after a violent battle, took the prison for themselves. The governor was killed and his head was paraded around the surrounding streets on a spike. This event is generally marked as the start of the French Revolution and is even celebrated as a national holiday each year.
